Scalene, the new album from Dies is coming this fall.

Josh Dies breaks the 4-year silence on his solo career with Scalene, the follow-up to 2007′s Aesthetics Of Violence. It seems the trademark genre-shifting that has marked Dies day-job band Showbread has a spill-over effect into his solo efforts: The second Dies record does not sound like the first.

Dies has traded its Skinny Puppy and KMFDM influences in for a dose of New Order and Depeche Mode. The crunchy, industrial edge that was the centerpiece of the first Dies effort is now a sort of delightfully ugly stain on what seems to be an otherwise poppy, new wave sort of record.

Scalene might not sound quite like heavy machinery breaking, but it does answer an age old question: “What would it sound like if Phil Collins collaborated with Trent Reznor?” You might not have been asking that question, but you’ll still want to hear the answer.
